GM actually negotiated a very nice deal with the UAW, creating a retirement fun account in which GM invested 4 billion in it or something, and the UAW would match that. UAW will then put money into this fund, and will take some of the burden off of GM.
This buy out is just a way of freeing up a bit more money. With the dropping dollar, and increasing Canadain dollar, its cheaper to make them here.
