"Gunshots" may have been fireworks, police say Monday, February 18, 2008 BY MICHAEL J. FEENEYSTAFF WRITER A report of gunshots brought a SWAT team and evacuations to a quiet Closter neighborhood Sunday evening, but police beieve fireworks may have been responsible.
At least eight residents called 911 to report hearing gunshots or loud explosions around 9:15 p.m., Patrolman Tim Conway said Monday morning.
The first call came from a couple who reported hearing what sounded like gunshots and seeing what they thought were flashes coming from inside a house across the street, said Conway.
Borough police and the Bergen County Police SWAT team responded to the residence at 85 Taylor Drive and evacuated neighboring homes as a precaution, he said.
“We just tried to be on the safe side,” Conway said.
After making several phone calls to the residence, police woke a sleeping couple inside, he said. Officers found no damage to the house or evidence of gunshots, Conway said.
Residents were allowed to return to their homes around midnight and the scene was cleared by 1 a.m. Monday, he said.
“The day shift is probably going to be scouring the area for evidence of fireworks,” Conway said.
