you guys have to... pay for garbage pickup? Like aside from taxes?

Yup. I live in Wantage, almost as far north and west in NJ as you can get. Now, I own (Well, I think of it as renting it from the bank for thirty years, really) two acres of land. My taxes are low because we do not have a municipal police department (NJSP), our public works department is responsible for parks, town roads and snow removal, our firefighters and first aid squad are volunteer. There is no city water (Have our own wells and septic tanks). And we don't have public garbage pickup. Our two options are:
A. Load your trash into a trailer, truck or car and take it to the dump yourself. Not a bad idea, but the county dump is ten miles away, so I don't relish the idea of weekly or biweekly trips there. I could easily see garbage piling up if I don't stay on top of it, and I don't like that at all (Not in bear country!).
B. Pay for private garbage pickup. It's only a few hundred dollars a year, and generally, I haven't had a problem yet. They've taken everything I've left at the curb without question.
It's not all that bad, really. I think of it as taxes aside from my mortgage.
