I gotta few usb wireless cards(with 3-4 ft extension cables) from before I lost my job at comcast. You can have one and try to see if it helps for the desktop. Im using one right now on my desktop and it flies.
Connection and speed also depends on a few factors tho. Like my cheap window blinds use that thin sheet metal, well they kill my signal when the card is near it, but when I pull them up the signal is the best out of any area in the room, just sitting on the edge of my window.
Also depends on electronics and metal items interfering with the signal to the card(probally being directly behind the desktop with lots of obstructive items around) compared to the laptop which has nothing around it to obstruct the signal.

Tried to explain it as well as I could, I cant sleep lately and its 5 am so I hope it helps.
