Children don't know to distinguish between good and bad behavior or how to level the difference between what someone does well and what parts of life they suck at. Based on so many of the images in society, meaning how so many negatives have become "cool", most kids don't have the knowledge base to pick between people attributes to come up with a good answer.
Athletes aren't roll models by choice, it is by default. They need to understand this and do what they can to put out an image that is constructive for kids to follow.
