this is wrong. if you drive an unregistered vehicle on NJ roads and a cop sees you, he will issue a ticket for unregitered vehicle.

is the transaction complete? did you give the guy the money? if so, have him mail you the title. get insurance. then take the title to MVC, to flip the title and get plates for the car. no plates == no registration == ticket.

now, i don't recommend this, since it's illegal, but i have used a spare set of plates to transport a vehicle home. this can net the same result as above in addition to 'fictitious plates', just so you know going in what the penalty could be. oh, and i always use a chase car that stays behind me (close, but not tailgating) on the trip home. that will typically keep the cops off your butt and keep you out of trouble.

but the best course of action is to get the title flipped and get it registered properly. no headaches that way.
