Tuluene was used to enhance F1 fuel 20 years ago when better technology wasn't available. Currently, basic 93 octane pump gas has better additives and detergents than any racing fuel had back then.

It is also a matter of the consistency and availability of your fuel of choice. You need to have a repeatable ratio in your fuel in order to get a proper tune up on the car and you don't know how an outside additive is going to react and mix with every detergent and existing additive in every brand of fuel. What are you gonna do if you aren't at your regular gas station by your house and you have to fill up? Hoping for the best is a good way to break parts.

As others have stated, 11:1 is a good pump gas ratio, even with your iron heads there should be no issue unless there is something else going on.
