Internet Brands bought LS1Tech in the spring of 2007, and in their purchase agreement NineBall and ProStockJohn were going to stay on as forum administrators for 2 years, then they would be removed from their administrator positions. When IB bought LS1Tech (along with it's sister sites PerfomanceTrucks.net, Mod Motor Tech, and Modern Hemi) they either didn't want Seat Stays Up, or agreed to let NineBall and PSJ keep that forum for themselves. Before the sale to IB, the user databases of all 5 of these sites were the same. If you registered on one of these sites, your username and password would work on all of them.
What NineBall and PSJ did was take a backup of the userlist from SeatStaysUp that was taken just before the sale to IB, and use it on their new forum, PlanetLSX.
As far as what was written in the contract of the sale, we can only speculate, but if IB didn't have anything in the contract regarding "ownership" of the database in use on SeatStaysUp, I don't think they have any legal grounds to stand on here.
Of course, IB owns close to 100 automotive sites (along with tons of others, including vBulletin), so I would imagine that they have a pretty good contract developed by now.....but I guess we'll wait and see.
