Ask him to produce docs for STFU.
VW's post mid to low on the problems per vehicle rating, which is the grail of quality. Buick and Jag have tied for first, Lexus now has dropped to 2nd.
Like Adam said, VW's and Audi's are very nice cars. They feel solid, the interior design and materials are very nice and usually are at the top of thier field...but problems after problems, and fixing them usually isnt as easy as compared to a comperable American or Japanese car.
They also tend to be much more complicated. Where a car like the Civic or Cobalt might have just a strut with a lower control arm with one ball joint, the Jetta will have two lower control arms, both with ball joints. then there will be the sway bar link that is tied into the control arm with a ball joint. Then the tie rod itself...ugh, its a mess of parts that WILL need to be replaced.
Just..very complicated stuff.
