How often do you drive it? If not often, prep the car with a good wash, then wax. From there, buy a nice car cover and keep it covered. Do not put the cover on when the car is dirty though as I'm sure you are aware.
The few times my car was without a garage, I just made sure to wash it regularly and with good product. Keep the mitts clean and your drying towels plush and clean as well. I normally use Tropi-Care products to wash the vehicle with a microfiber mitt, and dry with waffle-weave microfiber drying towels. I do not notice any scratching of any kind with this process.
