Funny... I've had my HP laptop for a little under 5 years and while it still works, its been thru 3 hard drives and burned out 4 memory sticks, the wireless card gets signal when it wants to, and i have to have something with weight against the headphone jack otherwise my speakers will only play out of 1 channel or not at all (the jacks internally messed up). It also overheats (i have it raised off the desk with a window fan blowing over it for cooling) due the the fan/heatsink assembly being messed up... and the fact that you can only get a replacement thru HP (and ebay lol) and I haven't really felt like paying the money for it. That may be more of a 1st gen athlon mobile issue though.
