back then they were known as Firebirds. Trans Am came later on. there was also a Formula back then, too. for some, the Firebird is the Trans Am. i see them as distinct vehicles, as some do with the WS6 - just because a base model firebird was not as capable as a WS6. ignore the lack of horsepower between 1973 and 1998, and what you had were cars made to look distinctive.
however, the car was born Firebird.
