I think what hawk means is that yeah it's a firebird, but an integral part of what makes people buy cars is the drivetrain options. when pontiac used only their motors, the firebird ment a little something more to pontiac owners, because they had drivetrain otions others didnt come with such as the 455 SD

You are correct what you mean, but for the majority of the frame, suspension, braking, and other parts, they were almost identical, what made them different from each other was the drivetrain interior, and outside appearnce, and performance numbers. when Pontiac started using chevy motors, though parts were easier to interchange and obtain, they became more identical then ever, and it now came down to interior and outside appearance that seperated them, otherwise performance wise, you were buying basicall the same car,
