IIRC, the 3.4 / M5 cars got either a 3.23 or 3.42 rear - either way you would have a 3 series carrier. I assume that the 4.56s you bought are also for a 3 series carrier? If you know that the gears in the current rear are stock, you can just open it up and look at the ring gear for the number of teeth and then divide. 3.08 and lower means it's a 2 series, 3.23 and higher means it's a 3 series (again, as long is you are sure it's factory).

And yes, the carrier bearings go inside the differential housing.
