I've known someone who had his car impounded because he uninsured the car but didn't turn in his personalized plates (he wasn't in the car with the personalized plates)...his license was suspended because he didn't turn in the plates.
When he was pulled over, his license was suspended at like 8am that morning, and pulled over at like 9am that same morning. So he had NO idea that they had suspended the license. Still had to impound his car. When he went to court to fight it, the judge was actually contemplating throwing him in jail, until they sorted it all out with the cops and prosecutor and realized that he never would have known about the suspension before being pulled over.
I realize, Alex, that you won't be around for a while, but I wouldn't take the chance. Keep liability only on the car at least, garage it, and be able to keep the plates and drive the car as soon as you are home for leave.
