TINTON FALLS — Emergency responders were on the scene of a fire and reported explosion on Shafto Road, after residents reported an explosion felt at least a mile away.

Firefighters were putting the final douses on the blaze at the 8,000-to-10,000-square-foot L and L Paving building.

Bruce Notte said he and his family felt the blast in their home on Mount Run in Tinton Falls, about a mile away. It cracked a window in his 19-year-old son's bedroom and caused his dogs to panic, Notte said.

Residents, who had begun wandering the streets after the blast, originally believed it had come from neighboring Naval Weapons Station Earle or a gas explosion at a home.

"We thought it was Earle right away because literally the whole house shook-the blinds on the sliding glass door jumped, the dogs ran all over; they just scattered," Notte said. "We get a lot of booms from Earle, but this was different from that; this was Earle on steroids , 10 times worse."
