not always true. theyre usually used for a guide for balancing. the yellow spot is usually the lightest part of the tire and typically gets mounted at the heaviest spot on the wheel. usually the valve stem. some wheels have different construction and if the technician mounted them noticing the wheel lopping on the balancer or an unnatural amount of weight wanted directly across from the point you can shift the tire on the wheel to drastically cut down on the amount of weight the balancer wants. different manufacturers have different colors too...some have yellow and white, some had red and yellow, some have all three, its just working with the wheels you get a feel for which goes where and how.
