I had an alternator fall off a shelf and land on my foot. Smashed my big toe and chipped the bone. It split the toe open across the "knuckle" portion so they couldn't stitch it closed, it had to heal on it's own. That poor toe has never been the same.
You might want to get an X-ray just in case a bone is chipped, but in my case the chipped bone didn't matter.
