No, we’re going to leave it for it’s educational value.

I've got 7+ years experience in the service business that tells me it is hard to compare estimates without details. Truth is you have no idea if you are right because you don’t have facts. And that is the lesson here. You need to get facts and then you can make an educated assessment.

I’ve got 5 estimates on my desk right now for a new roof on my house. They range from $7000 to $8900. Now I have to decide what the differences are, as each one lists different steps being taken – such as who is getting permits, disposal, fixing soffits, different brand materials, etc. My point is if the simple question is “new roof” then either the $7000 guy is cutting corners or the 8900 guy is gouging me. But when I look into the details of the bids the picture is certainly different.
