If the 78 only has surface rust that can be removed and dealt with, and the frame is straight, and the major components are there and salvageable and....

Only buy the 78 if it can run and drive today. You will want to drive it while you work on it.

Keep the 87 and enjoy the differences between the two as you drive them.
