Air is forced to rise near this feature. Instability associated with this so-called "Norlun instability trough" (NIT, for short) can produce snowfall rates of several inches per hour in snowbands only 25-50 miles wide. Central and south will doubtfully get much snow from a northern storm. Its the southern ones that reek havoc. I wish we would get pounded again...
