Posi offroad is meh....better than an open rear, but still not anywhere near as good as a locker. And some did get posi rears, but not many.

See here for pics of the D35, D44, and 8.25. Should be able to tell what you have from that. D35 and 8.25 look pretty similar but the 8.25 has a flat bottom that sticks out from the cover a little that the D35 doesn't have. Also, you don't have ABS do you? If you do, it's definitely a D35.

As far as replacing the D35, I would just grab a 29 spline 8.25 (29 spline was stock in 8.25s on 97-01s) and swap that in. That will be all you need unless you plan on getting into some real hardcore wheeling or want to do lots of rock crawling (which we don't have here in NJ).
