I rented a UHaul and car trailer (Auto Transport) this summer. It wasnt a bad experience.
I would suggest that you rent the trailer by going through the website, and do it about 7 days in advance. They will call you to confirm the rental and they will want you to come in early to make sure your vehicle is able to tow the trailer. They also want to know that the vehicle you are hauling is not too much weight.
Tow trucks, unless you have AAA Plus, are a LOT more expensive to pickup and deliver a car, been there, done that. Its $54.95 and the insurance was only about $14 for the trailer like Paul said.
Also the front tie downs were basically part of the trailer.
