I will say Quake/Quake 2 was a HUGE step in first person shooters. The online and game physics lacked hard core but the engine was very advanced for the time. The game went open source in the 90's (meaning the source code went public for others to modify the game).
The guys who made Counter-Strike used the source code to make the first version of Counter-Strike. It was the first sign of what today's first person shooters are; it had a good physics engine and the guns had ammunition/reloading/etc... minus all the Hints and "helpful tips".
