But they were what the public wanted. Firebird aside, just in 1979 GM sold more Camaros than GM has sold 5th gens since they hit dealerships- by 50k units. In '78 it was 40k units, and in '77 it was just about the same. 3/4 million Camaros in 3 years. The performance was horrible, the camshafts were pencils, compression ratios were awful, but the buyers were still there for some reason. Performance wise nobody will argue that now is the best time. That's obvious in the huge trend of people doing engine swaps to modern stuff. Same with transmissions.

And FWIW, 1979 Ferraris were **** too. They looked nice but were a far cry from what we have now.
I always racked it up to heavy use of drugs finally taking a toll on the population by the late 70s.
