It would prob be ~2800 for the trans/verter and then a controller if you don't want to manually shift it for ~500.  
 
Tossing a GV behind a TH350 would prob end up costing the same, and you would not end up with a new trans

 This is what I was going to post.
Just go for an OD trans and call it a day, since it sounds like he would need both a new trans and a GV unit.
