It boils down to money, as all things do. I'm only guessing here, but I'd imagine it's more to do with minimizing their own costs than getting more money out of you. Which blue-collar company doesn't want to keep their prices competitive? The higher their cost, the higher yours.
People who want heated seats will often look for a sunroof and premium sound as well. Or, the majority of people who want the smaller engine with the manual trans and no power seats for hypermiling, often won't care for X, Y & Z bells & whistles. I think the "packages" are split mainly based on demographic research and majority rule. I don't suspect it's
as much about coercing the consumer into dishing out more money.
