California did a cool thing a few years ago that allowed owners of vintage cars to apply for new plates, with their current registration or custom, but in the old styles. It was fairly expensive, north of $100 per reg if memory serves. I think they did 3 of the old style plates, including the 'black plates' that were issued for most of the 60's and into the early 70's.

If I had a vintage car that I was proud of I would consider applying for reissue plates as long as the price wasn't exorbitant.
