The gauge bouncing back and forth could either be the gauge, the wiring, or the sender in the tank. Most likely the sender in the tank. So you would need a fuel pump and sending unit. Dropping the tank will require you to drop the exhaust out of the way, followed by disconnecting the panhard rod and un bolting the rear shocks and tq arm. This will allow the rear to swing down and forward enough to drop the tank out.
