If your car had 3.08 or numerically lower gears, then you should have a series II carrier...if the factory gears were 3.23 or numerically higher, then you should have a series III carrier. IIRC, there are companies that make 3.23, 3.42, and 3.73 gears for a series II carrier, but I do not know if they make 4.10 gears for the series II.
Also - do you know why your buddies trans kept blowing up? It couldn't have just been because it wasn't a lockup, or every other non-lockup trans would theoretically blow up repeatedly too.
