If you were in the trooper's shoes, would you feel comfortable walking up to a car where you just saw the driver make a sudden motion inside the vehicle and put his hand(s) down near the console(which happens to be where a lot of people unlawfully keep their firearms)? You said the officer passed you on the left initially, so he would have had a clear line of sight to see the detector in the windshield. He saw you make a sudden motion, which he only knew after he walked up to the car was to move the radar detector. Having it in the windshield basically tells a LEO that you have intent to speed, why would you need it if you were a law abiding citizen who doesn't exceed the posted limit? You both know why it's there. When you moved it, it showed the officer that you knew it didn't look good to have it there. If you pulled over, shut the car off, and left your hands in plain view with no sudden motion he would have been more at ease walking up to the car and probably would have given you a verbal warning.
