OK so a little off topic for this club but i know some one you have guns prob and even some officers on here i think too. I have a good understanding of nj gun laws, worst place to live if you want to own them. I have my id card and permit for a pistol.

My question is more around an air gun. I know they fall under a real gun as far as jersey is concerned but i cant see bringing it to a gun range just to fire it. Are there any laws around fireing a BB/air/break barrel gun on you personal propety? I honestly went to dicks after a funny conversation with some friends and talking about A Christams Story. witht he intent to buy a cheapo red rider plastic bb gun. I walked out with a G1 Extream with a scope and all. Got it home and let it rip and was shock at how loud the thing was. Barrel smoking and all, the soda can i put on the fence went flying! I was a blast but then i started to wonder about laws in jersey as i know just how stricked everything is.

now i did some research but nothing really came up about limitation of bb gun in nj. I know its a gun so i would think to error on the side of caution. I have cool neighbors on either side but it could easily be heard many houses away.

just curious what you think about letting a few rip in the backyard. Cant see myself using it all that often but i buy **** on a whim from time to time so i figured id ask.

Yeah, NJ is definitely the strictest state when it comes to gun control. You are correct in assuming your air rifle or BB gun is considered a firearm. And there is nothing stopping you from carrying it around your property (Although you can expect passersby to call the police if they see you walking around your yard with a rifle, even if it is an air rifle...trust me

). Discharging it? I scoured the Criminal Law and MV Handbook for this and couldn't come up with anything. So I did a few internet searches. Seems that a lot of towns have adopted Chapter 86 and modified it to suit their needs. The gist of it seems to be that there's a determined amount of feet you are permitted to fire a weapon in proximity to any structure or dwelling, unless it's your own (I saw 300 feet and 450 feet, to name a few). Silly as it sounds, I would check to see if your town has a website that lists the local code or call someone at town hall and ask.

Time was, you'd go out in the yard and shoot and no one would bother you, but in our post 9/11/Columbine world, anyone so much as sees ANY gun they poo themselves.

Try living in NYC. Seperate Rifle and Handgun licenses (just paid $360 to renew my handgun license) and our own version of the assault weapons ban which states if your rifle is on a list of possible "evil" guns and has even 1 of the evil features (like detachable mag), it's an assault weapon and can't be kept in any of the 5 boroughs. You can own and store AR's in NYC.....However if you built your own, I'm assuming that your rifles might have some feature deemed illegal in NY state. i.e. clips with over 10 round capacity or full auto to name a couple.

To the OP. definitely check your town and county rules. When I moved to NJ from NYC I called my local precinct, contrary to popular belief they where very helpful and explained every county and town restriction.

I thought NYCs assault weapons were the same thing as NJ. A gun can have 2 but no more than 1 of the pre-deemed assault features. Which on most every gun is a detachable mag.

It really comes down to a pre-ban or post ban state, so if a state is post-ban they pretty much have the same rules as any other state regarding post-ban regs.

Actually California is MUCH more strict on post-ban compliance. If you think it is bad in NJ, go look around at the restrictions in CA. No removable magazine.

Another one of the things most people have on a rilfe is a pistol grip, dont really know what the alternatives are though

Most rifles/shotguns do not come with a pistol grip... unless you are doing tactical stuff with your fire arm, a pistol grip is useless anyways. IMO of course.

I gotta say as liberal as I am I feel like vomiting at the gun laws in this state. I understand that gun crime is a serious issue in the cities but they're going about it the WRONG way. What's even more ridiculous is needing a gun permit for a ****ing airsoft gun. Absolutely ridiculous. Anyway, once I recover from my knee surgery I plan on getting my firearms license. I want to start with a simple rifle but would like to eventually go to something like an AR. I've tried searching online for the laws but I can't seem to get a real answer in terms of if an AR is legal or not. I tried calling the Edison police department and they gave me the runaround with giving me information. Anyone know if AR's are legal in NJ? If they are anyone have a link to a site that shows NJ legal AR's?

ARs are perfectly legal, just needs to fire one round per pull of the trigger, and not have to many evil things to it.

Downside to a centerfire rifle is that in NJ, they can only be fired on a private range.

Haha some Call of Duty ****. What would be a good rifle around 300 for a starter? I'm hoping to get the ball rolling with the permits and licenses next month. I was hoping to have it by now but damn this surgery to hell!!!

IMO, a great little fun rifle to learn on would be a Ruger 10/22.... more customizable than a civic and is easy to shoot, and more importantly cheap to shoot. Its a semi automatic, ten round .22 rim fire rifle.... yes its not a "real" rifle to most, but its a blast to shoot.

Can be shot at state ranges and is a good way to learn how to shoot.

Can you tell what I own?

What are you talking about? You can hunt in NJ with a centerfire cartridge, that means you can shoot them on State or private property. the problem is the caliber and velocity of the round/ammo/type of rifle and most places are not equiped to handle high velocity rounds

I've shot my AR at the Bullet Hole before, that's a public range. I've shot a 12 ga. there too loaded with 00 buck.

Where and for what can you hunt in NJ with a rifle?

AFAIK you could only hunt with blackpowder, shotgun and bow...

And to clarify, a state public range for licensed NJ hunters will not allow centerfire rounds...
