How to determine a rear gear ratio PLEASE READ

So i got a rear today in a trade for my wheels, as well as a center console from a TGO MEMBER.

I was told several times that this rear was a posi 323 rear from a 98 camaro that he pulled himself from a freinds car.

Length is 4th gen like stated(measure it and compared to the rear in my car)

Pop the cover off and on the backside of the gear says "canada 1987" YEA I GOT CURIOUS!
Starting turning the yoke and watching the mark that was ALREADY on the gear and boy the gear turns 2 and 3/4 turns.

Indicating 273's from what im told I donno maybe im wrong but I checked a dozen times.

I just want to know if that is the correct way to get a good estimate of what the gear ratio is.
THATS ALL

Although your estimate is the cheap and dirty way to do it you should do as Tim says and either count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gear and divide or the number of both should be stamped on the ring gear.

I did the dividing. 2:73s. As soon as I saw canada 87 under the patents list on the center unit i knew something was fishy. this dude mentioned wanted another 3rd gen rear to put in his car for some reason blah blah im assuming he swapped the posi unit and gears in his 3rd gen and this rear and tried to play me.

I pmed him on tgo asking how he thinks I should go about this deal and how im not happy. So well see.

Where the stalker when u need him.

Look at the unit it very well could be a 4th gen 2:73 unit but it still stands that I was told it was a 3:23 rear.

Whats the number stamped on the actual housing? A 3:23 rear would be a 3 series rear and a 2:73 would be a 2 series. This would help decide whether it was an actual 3:23 rear to begin with.

I can do one better...

If they are GM gears, look on the ring gear edge to see if the number of teeth are stamped on it. Should be something like 41 10 or 41 11 or something like that.
