What would you do?

This may get kinda long, as there are a couple parts to this question.

So I get a card in the mail from Colonial Hyundai in Ewing/Trenton that this week they will give me the full base MSRP for when my car was new to use towards a new or used car. The only deductions they'll make is for mileage above "normal," and I am well over normal (max they would deduct, based on what it says on the card, is $1900 I think). New my car was around $14k. The other thing it says in the card is it can't have any body work or paint. I have a dent on the driverside rear bumper, and the rear quarter panel (I guess that's what it is) is bent outwards a bit under the taillight from when I backed into my father's truck. My car is currently worth around $5k (it's a 2002 Elantra btw), and I owe around $5k right now.

My father thinks I should go and at least see how much they will give me for it, since they obviously won't give me the full base MSRP. I won't buy a brand new car, but I suppose I could go for a used, if they have something decent on the lot.

Here's where it's tricky. I'd probably go at least see what they'd give/what they've got, but I start work in Philly next week. I really don't want to be driving a brand new car (or even a used, as they usually are not that old) in the city every day. It'll get damaged pretty quick. My father seems to think, if they give me a decent amount for my car, I can put a decent amount down and sell the car for what it's worth when I drive it off the lot, and still make some money on it, then go from there.

What would you do? I need some other opinions, heh.

Never hurts to see what they will give you, and see what they have on the lot. You may end up "losing" a little bit of money, but your car loan would be paid off, and you would have a car that you aren't afraid to drive in the city.

How does your current car run?
It already has dings.... so leaving it parked in philly... and more potential damage may occur..... it probably wouldn't bother you much... right?

Also, getting into another car... be it used or new.... could have unforseen problems by you/ dealer.... and starting a new job with an unprooven car can be iffy.

If your current ride is fine..... keep it.

It runs fine, but it's due for a lot of maintanence, timing belts and such that start to wear down. It has 75k miles on it. But, I still have 25k miles before the power train warranty ends.

I don't care about it being damaged, but I do care about it being stolen. My job isn't to just drive to my office for 8 hours and then home...I get to drive to my office, then spend the day going to meetings and going to client's houses and/or schools and such, so it will end up parked in a number of "bad" spots, I suspect. I always lock it, and I could put my club on it, and take the cd face plate off...but if someone is gonna steal it, they'll steal it no matter what I do. As such, I was considering getting a beater for a couple hundred, but you're right, driving an unproven car into philly could be worse than driving what I've got.

It will be paid off Oct 06 if I make normal payments. with the new job and living at home for a couple months, I was considering making larger payments to pay it off sooner, so when I do move out, it'll be paid off quicker and I won't have to worry about it. this was of course my thought process before I got this card.

So yeah, I dunno what to do. I guess it couldn't hurt to look. Someone wanna go with me? I don't wanna go alone, nor do I wanna take my father, as he did a horrible job with this car...he got $500 taken off the sticker...THAT'S IT! Gotta see if they are open at nite...hmm.

Take tyler with you....he'll jew them down a few grand on any car in the lot either through his bargaining skills or the sheer fact that they won't want him on the lot any longer.

something about that old saying "if it sounds too good to be true..." this one smells a bit like that. they are playing with the numbers somehow and you can be certain that a dealer (if it's through them and not the factory) will be robbing you blind on any "program" that gets advertised.

always take someone with you whenever you go car shopping, even if that person just sits there and says nothing the whole time. they can be making mental notes about the conversation and pull you aside any time it sounds like you'll be getting screwed. further, always say you have to talk it over with your significant other. there is nothing the dealer can do about that, other than offer to call him. that's when you tell them that he's an over-the-road truck driver who is away on assignment right now, but he'll be back in a few weeks (if you feel uneasy about the situation) 8)

years of working as a car salesman - i've heard just about every excuse known to man why they couldn't buy that day (yet most did as long as it appeared that i sweetened the deal a bit). no, i am not happy about having been a car salesman, but it does give me unique insight into the operation that few people get to observe on a daily basis. remember that, too, that as "prepared" as you are, how often do you go shopping for a car? the person across the desk from you has to be there everyday...

Also, the card doesn't say that there are other exclusions, like other rebates won't count. Since I just graduated college I can get the college grad discount, and who knows what else. SO not only can I get my car paid off, I could get a new or used at a decent discount and lower both my payments and my insurance...

As for using the club.... eh, it is bypassed in about 30-40 seconds.... and aftermarket stereo makes things a bit inviting

But.... driving a non proven car into philly for work related functions makes it a bit iffy.

You may want to bring a 2nd opinion ( local gear head) for inspection of vehicle.

Or..... the north meet.... gets relocated to your dealer... and we all give their cars a full once over that would give them a heart attack!

Yeah, as I said, if they want my car, they'll take it.

As for how car smart I am, I can change my oil and rotate my tires. That's about it. Hence why I thought I'd ask for someone to go with me. As for the meet bein relocated, this "deal" thing is only this week (until Sat), so that won't work, lol Would be kinda funny tho.

I was looking online at the dealer's site, and they have a 2000 Jag S type for $16k with I think 60k miles on it. But, a jag in the city is worse than my hyundai, lol. Buy the jag, give my brother my hyundai, and then buy my dad's subaru off of him to use as my beater...lol. Anyhow, maybe I"ll run down tomorrow afternoon and see what they have/what they'll give me.

Also you have a powertrain warranty on your current Hyundai; the 10-year/100,000 mile warranty for Hyundai only applies to the FIRST owner of a Hyundai that was purchased from a dealership; secondary, tertiary, and beyond owners (EVEN if bought from a dealership) DO NOT get the 10-year/100,000 mile warranty. They only get the 5-year/60,000 mile powertrain limited warranty, which I don't remember exactly what it covers, but it covers significantly less. I know this because I'm actually looking to buy a Hyundai this fall as a daily driver.

I'm down with the others...

Dealers = CRAP.

If the current car is fine, don't buy another one.

That's the thing, I don't want a Hyundai. I want something else, just about anythjing else. Like I said, they have a Jag on the lot...it's also a Cadillac dealer, so I could go that route

I called this morning to see what my pay off is...$4831. KBB puts the value between $5165 and $5885 (depending if you classify it fair or good).

And true, the original warranty may not exist, but if it's 5 yrs/60k from when it's purchased by second owner, it's still pretty good, I think. Figure if I were to sell it, I'd take it in for an inspection at the dealer (free) and have them fix anything under warranty, and have them tell me what else needs to be done and I"ll get it done (belts and such, probably) before selling it.

Problem is, getting someone who will buy it. Oh well.

5 yr/60k warranty is limited though... it's only for powertrain, so it covers a ****load less than the original warranty.

My warranty is limited too. My original warranty had the 5 yr 50k bumper to bumper...that's long gone. I'm only left with the power train...and it's a limited warranty, so I"m pretty sure it's the same that you would get buying a used car or whatever.
