My 1991 z28 was 2 years over due last month,so I went to DMV and got collector vehicle registration. The only thing they check is your odometer at the inspection station. It was an extra 25 dollars on top of the new registration. With collector registration you can only drive 6000 miles in 2 yrs,but the car is exempt from all safety and emissions testing. The only thing that has to work is your odometer.

From what I have been hearing they are really cracking down on this kind of stuff. I knew someone but I think he is out of buisness. Best bet is to ask around with buddies, mainly the ghetto variety

Sure can! I rolled up with tinted windows and passed. As long as your odometer works, it's all good.

ive known about the collector registeration for a while, heres a tip i'll be using for my cars, get a spare speedo/cluster setup...when you go for inspection, throw it in, drive a lil, then pull it and rack up the mileage with no worries switching the cluster mainly works on non-computer cars, but should work with digital displays too, as long as they dont hook up to the computer...

good idea. I was thinking of driving a bit and if I got close to what they limit you just unplug the speedometer. Mines mechanical, so it should be pretty easy.

make sure you get collector car status and not QQ plates. I had collector car for my 68 GTO. the only physical difference being the sticker, its triangular instead of square and yes you can only drive 6g's a year although my classic insurance company gave me less. you wouldnt have to mess with your insurance tho. if you get QQ's or "historic" the rules are much more strict, you get the QQ plates and you technically are not allowed to drive the car anywhere besides to and from shows or cruises, to and from the repair shop and stuff like that. if you have QQ's and drive around every day you might get a local cop with a stick up his ass that recognizes you and gives you a ticket for breaking the rules at which time your QQ's can be revoked.

I have also been looking into collector's registration for my Camaro. The only problem is:
Quote:
is insured as a limited use "collector vehicle." (Proof must be supplied at time of odometer verification.)
|
Does anyone know if this actually means that you must have specific collector's insurance, or can you just tell your regular insurance company that you only drive the car on weekends and such?
It seems like every collectors insurance company I looked at either won't insure the car because it's too new ('87) or won't insure me because I'm too young (23).

Hey Justin,
As long as your regular insurance company sees it as a limited-use (pleasure) vehicle, it's OK. I don't think you can put Collector Registration on the only vehicle you own, but I could be wrong too. The state might look up how many vehicles you have registered in your name before you can get it. I didn't have a problem since the Cherokee is in my name too, but I don't know of anyone that has done it on their only car. I know 91chevyZ28 has a few cars that he rotates between as well.

My camaro is registered in my dads name and when it was done they told them it was a weekend/fun car only and they asked the annual mileage it would be driven and my dad told them about 3000. So I guess I'll have my dad change the registration and i'll be set.

I have a '91 Lumina as a daily driver, it's just not yet in my name. I'm working on that though. I'll have to hurry up and get that done so it's in my name when I register the Camaro. Thanks Steve!

The problem is that my PCM was converted to OBD1 so I can tune it myself without problems. If they plug into the diag. port, they are not going to get a reading. I am hoping to find a shop that will sort of let me "pay" for the sticker.
That collector car registration sounds interesting. So do you have to have collector car insurance to have this registration? Have any LT1 F-body owners here bought a spare guage cluster to install when they check the odometer? There is no way I would stay under 6,000 a year.

i forgot to mention, to have collector car status you DO have to have another car in your name, or if you are married, between you and your wife. because the collector car can only be driven 6gs/2yrs its obvious that you will need another car to drive everyday. the state doesnt care about this and only issues the sticker and checks the odometer (and yes they check to see if it works, they look at it when you come in and tell you to drive around the block one mile and come back then they recheck it and issue a sticker) but you will not be able to insure it if you dont have a second vehicle.
