Possible closing of Ft.Monmouth

This is now the second time that the fort has come up on the this BRAK list. This is pretty bad, since Eatontown only really exists because Ft.Montmouth is there. 30k people are employed either with the base, or have ties to teh base, not to mention the tons of stores in the area that these people shop, eat and live near. This move could kill the area around me, and its pretty depressing.

Ft Monmouth has been on the shutdown list many a times in the past...

Even though it's on the list, I SERIOUSLY doubt they will be closing the base; it's the only military base in the area that has a medical facility. All the retirees (and dependents, like myself) go there for medical treatment and free prescriptions.

As well, they have a commisary there that many people shop at as well.

However, if it does in fact close, you are absolutely right; the whole Eatontown area will turn to ****.

That area isn't all that bad though.. Tinton Falls and Colts Neck aren't far off with all the rich people there.

I was actually just at Ft. Monmouth today visiting my doctor... I took the motortcycle down and actually saw a sweet 4th gen camaro, white, for sale.

Do you have the BRAK list? Fort Dix/McGuire was supposedly going to be on it...curious if it is...the chances are slim that it will, since Dix is supplying the war right now...

Dix was closed around '92. It's now Guard/Reserve only and they've been leasing/selling the base off to other organizations since (Coast Guard, FBI, Federal Prison, State Prison, Air Force, Marines, Navy, etc. all own/lease property on Dix right now). McGuire was set to close around the late '80's but was chosen to be the major east coast AMC base so it'll be around for a long time to come. Monmouth might close, but it'll probobly get turned over to the Guard and Reserve if it does. I'd see Lakehurst close before Monmouth. Hell, most of Lakehurst IS closed already. I know Monmouth does a lot of electronic warfare so their major competition is Westover in MA, but as for NJ, it's the only one. Also, just because a base might close for Active Duty, doesn't always meen it'll be bad for the community, just look a Stewart in NY. It was an Active Duty AF base a few years ago and since it closed, it's gotten more money into the community by becoming the first ever Guard/Reserve/Army/Marnine/Commercial base ever. They have C-5s, C-130s, Blakhawks, Chanooks, a few Marine F-18s are using it as a temorary home, and they sold off some of the old hangers, PAX terminal, and tower over to the FAA and they now fly commercial airline flights out of there too. When they did this it was the only military base with a civilian controlled tower. Now I think there is one other in CA (March I think). It would suck if Monmouth closed because they don't have that option.

Ft Dix/McGuire AFB shouldn't worry about closure; they have the largest refueling wing on the East Coast. They're a vital base for refueling our fighters that cross the Atlantic.

BRAC list is supposed to come out sometime today... I am anxious to see it. If Monmouth and/or Dix were to close, it would be a pretty serious impact on my life. I go to Dix/McGuire every other week to do my grocery shopping, and I'm at Monmouth at least once or twice a month for doctor appointments.

Steve, I agree and hope that... Lakehurst or Pickatinny would go prior to Monmouth. Monmouth is also huge for CECOM (I can't remember what it stands for)... but it's big lol.

Bottom line is, Dix and McGuire are crucial for the NJ tri-state area. I know military veterans from all states in the area (NY, CT, MA, PA, NJ, DE, MD) that use these two bases (Dix/McGuire for the Commissary, Monmouth for Medical) regularly.

All we can do is wait, and hope.

Al,

Hate to say you were right

Big blow not to just your area, but the entire tri-state area

I need to keep up with what's going on with the base now to find out where everything is being relocated.

From what I just read, it is not definate that it is closing. Bush and congress have to approve it. And the committee will make visits in the next couple months to see if the recommendation is warranted. I dunno how the visits work, but it could be that enough of stink is raised about the effects of the closing that they might disagree.

Something to think about at least, that there may be a chance it won't close just yet.

Bill,

I'm not exactly sure... Tricare's (the Military healthcare system) website says that there is an MTF (Military Treatment Facility) at Dix/McGuire AFB, but when I called them up they said they aren't an MTF... so I'm not exactly sure. If McGuire is in fact an MTF, then the impact won't be so bad, because I can just shift from Monmouth to Dix (I go to Dix anyway for groceries).

Aside from Dix supposedly being an MTF... the only other one closer to me is on Staten Island.. which means I pay the $7 (or is it $8 now?) bridge toll just to get there. Grr.

All I know is that there is a HUGE uproar in the military(active and retired) community in NJ already... I've been getting phone calls all morning from military friends and whatnot with their bitching and ranting (just like I'm doing lol).

Let's hope so...

I know it's not absolute yet, I just meant Al was right about it getting put on the list. I honestly didn't even think it would make it that far, because there have been talks about Monmouth closing (for real) for about a year now. I've been following it ever since.

I also seriously doubt Bush/Congress/whichever committee will be visiting EACH and EVERY location... probably only the ones that have a significant conflict whether or not to close. Then again, let's hope Monmouth is on that list!

As I said, from what I read, they visit every site on the closing list to see if it's warranted. But that was only once source, so I dunno.

The part my mom works for was being cut up and sent to a fort in CT, and out to Cali. I know my old job relied heavily on Ft.Monmouth, and BIG money on 2 new buildings and hiring tons of ultra-smart engineers and ex-military to head up the divisions. Sucks they will all have to be cut up and sent out.

I know that its not final, but its on the list and that sucks.

Yeah, it seems there are a lot of people attempting to save Monmouth. The guy who helped save Dix/McGuire the last 4 times it was on the list is now helping to save Monmouth, as well as Rush Holt, and who knows who else. I think there's a chance...how good, I haven't a clue. It'll be interesting to keep reading about it tho.

The Army panel voted today and they agreed to close Ft. Monmouth. It has to be in Bush's hands by September 8th. If Bush decides to sign it, Monmouth could be closed by the end of the year. Looks like the Real Estate market wins this one.

I doubt it would be closed by the end of the year... it will take at least a year or two to get everything relocated.

Very well put. I couldn't agree more. Sadly, the discussion of Monmouth closing has been a debate for many many years, even as far back when my dad was stationed there back in 83.
