Collector Vehicle Registration Q's - NJFBOA - Home of New Jersey's Camaros and Firebirds

I'm trying to register my '81 Camaro as a collector vehicle but I'm kind of lost. I have the "Application For Collector Vehicle" all filled out. I just called the DMV Regional Office and they told me that I need to register it at my local DMV agency (Baker's Basin) since regional only handles Historic Vehicle registration. But I went to Baker's Basin over the weekend and they told me they don't handle that, the regional office does. Who do I send this too? And what is the fee? On the back of the application it says $25 for initial, $10 for renewal. Well, I'm renewing the registration (so is it a renewal?) but it's the first time registering as a collector vehicle (initial?). Is that fee in addition to the regular registration fee? Also, do you absolutely need to have collector insurance (I was told it wasn't necessary by an operator at the DMV but I don't know who to believe)? Sorry about so many questions but I can't get a straight answer from anybody at the DMV. Any tips?

Any local DMV should do it. You probably got a jamoke behind the counter that didn't realize that "Collector" and "Historic" are two different things. Technically, you could get Historic (QQ) plates now, since your car is 25. Honestly, you probably should get those, because it's the same mileage limitation (3K/year) and it's just a one-time fee.

Anyway, the $25 fee is in addition to the $43.50 registration fee for the first time. After that, it's just the $43.50 plus the $10 per year.

Thanks for the info, it's exactly what I was looking for. How about the insurance thing, is it a requirement? Also, I thought the QQ plates only allow you to drive if you're going to a car show whereas the collector registration only limits your yearly mileage. It would take a car show for the blind or a really dumb cop for me to get away with that in my car's current condition.

As far as the insurance goes, I think I got my Collector registration before I had Hagerty insurance, so no issues there. As long as the car has a valid insurance card, you should be OK. They can't tell from the card whether it's a collector policy or standard anyway. For QQ'd cars, I know they're only supposed to be used for shows and stuff, but I know one guy that's been daily-driving a primered '63 Galaxie for at least 15 years with QQs on it. I guess it depends on where you drive and who you know in those towns.
