I don't remember the specifics from a non-titled NY car. I remember reading a little about it a few weeks ago when I bought my Jeep though - since I got it from NY.

Need clear title, then re-title under the new owner. Once you do that then you can register it in NJ.

New cars come with Cert of Orgin then get a clean title from the state.

You can't title it without an actual clear title. Been there done that. If the title is lost and you have possesion of the car you can get another title reissued through Broadway title but it may not always work, takes a while, and may not be cheap.

Then you must not have been very thorough. My brother got a title for his '70 Chevelle from there. Took a few months, but he got it and has the car registered now... but that's in PA. I'm not sure if that is what matters.

my 2 cents doing this 35 years -- jersey with out of state titles or reg-as will do a back round check -- i know this to be true we build Harley's and have forever it seems and titles are always a thing with them -- if the last titled owner ows money to bank of judgments or it was reported stolen the state will ask you to bring it to the state police - and all your paper work -- i have learned it takes up to 6 months after a title is even issued by new jersey to believe a car bike is OK i have had it happen in my shop many times with e bay stuff -- they take it ( state police ) and if they think you had any part in the underhanded deal -- u get cuffed on the spot had that happen as well -- so if no title don't care if they give it to me we stay away -- just so u no -- jz

NY doesn't have titles on cars that old. You'll need a copy of his registration, do a VIN tracing with pencil and paper when you get the car and the bill of sale. Get the bill of sale notarized as well. It shouldn't be an issue but they will need the old registration.
