Honestly.... I wouldn't do it.

I looked into it (I'm doing a 496 for my '69 when the time comes) and the aftermarket support for the Vortec 8.1 just isn't there apparently. Not worth the hassle.

when did you do your research? you can get 502 rect. port heads with 325cc intake for 1200, complete shipped to your door. you can't get that for a 350. all said and done, 650 lbs ft and 620 hp for $6500. that also can't be done with a 350. if i was ready, that motor would be mine. i only hope i can find one when i am ready.

Last year. There were five of them up for sale on ebay for $2500 each (in crates). What I was told is that a significant amount of Mark IV and Mark V stuff is not compatible (rotating assemblies, camshafts, etc) so even though there are some parts you can use it will be tough to put together a good combination.

look around again. if you can get good heads already worked to 325cc intake for 1200, and the whole kit and kaboodle for $6500, including the long block, i'd say start looking under the seat cushions for spare change. it can be done, just written about in one of the rags (chevy hi perf. july 2007). the cover says "small block versus big block, $6500 pump gas shootout, 422CI versus 505CI". they got to the 505.3 inches by boring .100 over a 454 and adding .25" stroke. Aerohead Racing supplied the heads for $1115, with 325cc intake ports (sorry, i knew it was somewhere around that).

parts list:
isky solid flat tappet cam, with 1.75:1 rockers lift is 0.638/0.654 with 259/268 degrees duration with lsa 106 degrees
ARP accessory bolt kit, balancer bolt and head bolts
Aerohead Racing new GM 14097088 cast iron heads 118cc combustion chamber, 325cc rectangular intake ports, stainless, swirl-polished valves 2.19/1.88, hardened seats, 3 angle valve job, 7/16th-inch studs with Manley guideplats and upgraded springs
Edelbrock 2902 Victor Jr 454-R intake
Fel-Pro gaskets
Isky lifters and pushrods
labor
total: $6360

now, this was just on the dyno, not in a real car, but they said they paid attention to the fact that they'd like to put it in a car, so it's not a dyno queen (like the small block in the same article). it maxed out at 594 lb ft and 622 hp with a compression ratio of 10.5:1 on 91 octane regular unleaded.

pretty sweet.

as far as incompatibility between the two motors, it's in the heads and it's a water jacket that needs to be shrouded by the deck and a specially made gasket.

no longer just the stuff of dreams. all it takes is a little patience for the aftermarket to pick up on the potential...

The only thing impressive about that motor is the cubic inches. A LS1 or LS2 would be the way to go for almost anyone or in my situation 427 LS7

I sure hope you'd be planning on aluminum heads/intake to go along with it, along with new front springs. That's an iron big block - VERY heavy piece, very bad mod for auto-x.

Oh my word yes. in the end the wya I see it, might as well buy an LSX block, or go with the LS7 idea, cause in the end your gonna be blowing more money into this then Ron does with rears.
