computer question for the nerds
so for a while my desktop would randomely freeze. Lately I've noticed it happens when I have a moving object on the screen.
Examples:
-JM and I both have webcams, so rather then talking on the phone we'd use them. After a few minutes my comp. would freeze.
-One time I had a GIF file up on my screen and I left it up for a few, came back and the comp. was frozen.
-Just tonight I was taking a history exam online that had a countdown clock on the top right of my screen. Comp. froze, I waited a few, rebooted, after another few minutes, same thing.
I've used AOL, IE, mozilla/firefox...happened with each browser at different times. Any ideas?

I new someone would make a joke about the webcam, get your mind out of the gutter, Gene You're the one always saying people here at NJFBOA are so immature....
Anyway, the computer was custom built a couple years ago and currently I have 1 GB of ram and 160 GB free space out of 186 GB total. Sometimes aol will be running in the backround, but I always have weatherbug running at the bottom of the screen. I might have Limewire running also, but thats not too often.

Virus? I've got a nasty trojan virus on my home PC that won't go away (Funny how we usually associate the word 'trojan' with PREVENTING disease!).

trojan is usually used in the context of 'getting in w/o being noticed'
ted, all i can suggest is getting AVG antivirus, spybot-search & destroy, zonealarm(firewall) and ad-aware.. all free
if you're still having problems after that it's something big

close limewire when your doing stuff, also check for spyware that may be caused from limewire. and while your at it get rid of limewire
get ares
http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/
...probably wont get rid of the problem completly but i bet its a contributing factor.

Unfortunately free=bad in most cases with computer software. There are exceptions though. It sounds like you either have a hardware problem as WildBilly mentioned (but it could be something else hardware related) or it could be some sort of adware or spyware that installed its self on your computer and snowballed and now your OS is infected out the wazoo. For free programs I recommend spybot-search & destroy, download here from download.com, for $30 I recommend Spy sweeper. If you get spysweeper I wouldnt bother with ad-aware or zone alarm, but if you only go with spybot the others wont hurt. Also you can download Hijack this here and save a log and post the log here and I can tell you some of the "bad" stuff to remove.

Noah, it's custom built, It's main gear. Do you guys think weather bug is a contributing factor to spyware as well? Thanks for all the info, when I get back to NJ I'll have to d/l those spyware things you guys mentioned and see what happens.

have you reinstalled windows within the last 6 months or so? windows tends to get all crapped up over the months/years. ive seen it so bad before that someones 2.8ghz computer will run like its a 600mhz computer. i remember i fixed this girls computer when i went to willy p, it was a relatively new computer but was slow as molasses, i reinstalled windows on it and it ran like it was a brand new computer. also for your spyware needs look up hitman pro. its a program that downloads and runs about 6 or so spyware programs automatically.
