LS1 Vs. LT1

Took a test drive in a supposed mid 12's ls1 camaro from a dealership. What a disappointment. I know lt1 have more low end torque and i just love that. When i got on, it in the Ls1, it didn't have as much pull as my car. Maybe its because i have gears. Or maybe because the car was beat to hell. I would really hate to sacrifice that lt1 feel when getting a ls1.

Having driven both..... they are 2 totally different animals.

LT1 has tons of low end torque
LS1 has lots of top end.

I'm a big fan of torque..... so I went with the LT1

"Feeling" doesn't win races. Power and driver ability does.

So you keep that great "feeling" motor, the rest of us will be waiting at the finish line

BTW, the LS1's band is so smooth the power doesn't hit you like a ton of bricks like a L98 or LT1 does. I had to get used to my LS1's when I switched.

ok...he's the deal...I've driven a 95 Z28 pulls great through 3500 rpm but falls off at around 4500 so it SEEMS like its a bottom end beast. The LS1 pulls all the way to 6k harder that any LT1. So it SEEMS like the LT1 has more bottom end but its not even close just...even with your gears, a 6 speed LS1 will eat you with out a thought.

Honestly lb for lb theres not a ton of difference in times at the track, for instance a stock 97 LT1 camaro might run 13.7-13.9@100mph and a 98 LS1 camaro might run 13.5@102, in the end theres not really a ton of difference in the final performance number so if you think 2 tenthswas going to be a big deal it really isn't lol.

Now for anyone out there that is thinking of flaming me and going to say there are stock 12 LS1's your correct but are few & far between, my 98 ran 13.5@103 with a lid & catback and most you'll find in stock form are in the mid 13's. My near stock 94 LT1 formula ran 13.7@100mph so the comparison is a valid one.

Now back to the issue at hand, ls1's have gotten TONS more aftermarket support than LT1's & therefore IMO have a much broader range of things you can do, not to mention cam shaft swaps are a sinch, tuning options are a dime a dozen, etc. oh and did I mention LS1's don't have an opticrap? In the end an LS1 is the way to go if you have the little extra cash just because of all the future possibilities.

My LT1 pulls up to 6200 ....... The optispark is a downfall. Its another one of GM's "good idea, bad execution and location"

The aftermarket is there for a GenIII. I would go with one in a heartbeat if I could.

This could turn into a 10+ page long thread of going back and forth of comparing apples to oranges.

all i know is that he posted saying he drove a mid 12 car at a dealership, he didnt post the year, transmission, mileage or mods to the car.........

bill is right, MOST of the pre ls6 intake cars didnt run 12s stock with either transmission, and MOST of the auto cars didnt run 12s stock in any year. there is a lot of important information that the original poster left out that is needed before any FAIR comparison can take place.

this is about the 3rd time he has made a thread comparing ls1s to lt1s, and i for one am sick of it, so i hope it dosent turn into 10 pages

1st part: Isn't he also the one that claimed his car was doing 13.2s(or something like it) stock? I would doubt it if the salesperson just blurted it out there.

2nd part: As much fun as it is to watch. I'm gonna have to just agree

Yeah, the way it feels has nothing to do with what the actual performance is. The LS1 is so smooth about the way the power comes it you don't realize how strong it is. It's really personal preference to which you like most. But it's also the cost difference. If you have a good running LT1, keep it. The extra $$ to move up to an LS1 car isn't really worth it unless you get something like an 01 or 02. You can use that $$ to make your LT1 better and more enjoyable. I find both the LT1 and LS1 are adequate for towing!

Mine pulled pretty high too. It was just a bolt on with similar mods as Jake-QwikZ28 and I would pull on him from a dig and from a roll in his 02 LS1. Once he started doing all the other fun things there was no way I was going to keep up with my small bolt-on list. At the time of this it was just a catback, CAI, a tune and gears in an A4 94.

Comming from someone else who has owned both and driven many.... LT1's DONT have more low end torque or pull harder. Thats what your assometer tells you but the LS1's powerband is wider and much smoother. Around 3rd gear the LS1 just takes off where the LT1 doesnt.

I have to agree with Monmouth here. Having driven both my cousins 97 Camaro and he drove mine. We both agreed that at the 3rd and 4th shifts my ls1 pulled much harder and faster then his lt1 even with him having some bolt ons to his engine. I found the LS1 to be a much smoother running car too.

i guess it is the assometer i mean i would keep my lt1 but 2 problems, its an A4, i want an m6, and it has lots of miles so it really isnt worth modding anymore.

Ive owned both and Id have to say the LS1 (being clearly the better engine) will out preform the LT1 any day of the week, but i suppose im am biased cause I was never really a big fan of the LT1 to begin with

I usually try and not buy cars that have been raced. Don't know how much the previous owner beat the piss out of it. How many trips to the track did it run, and how hard was it driven on the street.

Could be nothing wrong with it, but its just my personal preference.
