Wow, I don't know what I'd do if this happened....
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1924211
Oh man, there'd be some SERIOUS hell to pay. The first few pages tell the details. For the shop owner to throw up his hands and pretty much not make the situation right is crappy.

i'm now afraid of where i left my car...
i know the guys that work in the shop, but if something was to happen to it i feel like i'd get left out in the cold like this guy...
but then again, i know none of them would borrow it for the weekend

This is everywhere. The shop is about 5 minutes from my parents house (where I lived a year ago) .. This is hardly the first issue this shop has had. Another shop, the place I got my work done at, actually offers discounted dyno tunes for those who have had CAM tune hackjobs. Its unbelievable with how many bad things have come out of CAM people still go.. this may be the last straw, though.

While the situation does certainly suck, the shop owner offered her ~$40,000 in settlement money, and offered to remove from the wrecked car any mods that weren't damaged, and reinstall them free of charge on another car that she purchased with the settlement money. And he also said that any mods that were damaged he would repair or replace as well.
He certainly never should have let the employee drive the car in the first place, but that sounds like a pretty fair offer to me.

I really don't know where to begin on this, I did offer to make everything right, and my offer was unacceptable to her.
This is the greatest nightmare of everyone involved, the shop owner, the car owner, everyone. My mailbox is full of hate mail from CF members, and I understand that. My side of the story is that I tried to make everything right, and Melissa chose to go through her insurance company and take me out of the picture of being a part of the solution.
My offer to Melissa, which was declined, was that she take the approximately $40k settlement for the vehicle from my insurance company, and release the vehicle to me so that I could remove the modifications to the car and those that were salvagable could be reinstalled by us on another car, those that were not I could repair or replace to as new condition. If she had cooperated this could have all had a better ending.
Instead she demanded that she file with her insurance company (I've never heard how much they offered) and that NO parts be reused, and that she choose another shop to do all the work and some of the parts (like the sound system for example) be upgraded at the same time. Carolina Auto Masters would pay for all parts and labor. I'm just not going to pay another shop to do the work on the car, and provide all new parts when the original car had much that was reusable.
When we were in constant contact in December, Melissa assured me that her insurance company had not evaluated the car, while in fact, she had already released the car to them and it had been moved somewhere else. I have not spoken with Melissa since that time. I would have to assume that the car has long since been sold as salvage and the reusable parts gone with it.
If the car is still impounded somewhere, I'd still be more than happy to take the parts off it, transfer those to a car that Melissa provides (from the settlement from her insurance company) that are in reuseable condition, repair or replace those that are not and make everything right. But Melissa chose another route, and that was her choice. I'd hoped her insurance company would settle for enough money for her build the car back just like it was. I assume that didn't happen, but have no way to know. Melissa has not contacted me since saying she would let me know when her insurance company got in touch with her, so I've been given no chances since my last offer to do anything more for her.
From the mail I've recieved she has gotten way more than the value of the vehicle and modifications out of CAM already via lost business. And that total will continue to grow, and her nightmare and my nightmare will continue with neither of us finding a way to wake up and it all just be a bad dream.
I've been sick about what happened, I hate that it happened, and I really hoped that my offer to make everything right had been accepted by Melissa.
I do wish her the best of luck dealing with her insurance company,
-jeff

I know....I was just telling you.
For those that don't recognize the name Jeff Creech, he's the guy that did all/most of the work on the infamous red T/A for the first big import vs domestic Pinks episode. You know, the one with the red Civic that got 20 car lengths?

i don't like how that shop owner handled it. he is in no position to be making demands. he should be protecting his business and offering to meet her every demand. because he didn't, he will still have to pay and now is reputation is ruined. what a moron

That is a messed up story, but you know what, its a normal thing done at many shops, not all, but many. My mom had her car taken to Admiral Nissan for something stupid done to it, and when she got it back, the tank was empty, mind you she had a full tank. Now this was a good 10 years ago, but still, it was somethign minor to be fixed, and they went driving around town in it, AND they didnt fill the tank back up!!. If I found out someone went joyriding in my car without me knowing when it would be getting work done on it, I would burn them at the stake, and then make them refund me money and fill my tank up, and if they crashed my car, man I hope they know a good cardboard box to live in, cause Id sue them so badly, they wouldnt have two pennies to rub together!!

So basically an employee totaled the car, insurance is only paying out 40k, and the guy is trying to scam her into accepting the insurance payout, not suing, having her sign the car over to him, he takes out the "mods", installs them on a new car that she has to pay for, and he get to make money parting whats left of the car out. Amazing. Scum bag til the end.
