Job Prospects Look Good for New Graduates
Caught this in a morning industry e-newsletter I get. I was a bit surprised by it. I guess it is good news for you recent graduates...
New Grad Hiring Outlook Good Despite Economy
July 11, 2008 (PLANSPONSOR.com) - The uncertain economy and labor market do not seem to be affecting hiring plans for new college graduates, according to a recent Korn/Ferry International survey.
The Korn/Ferry Executive Quiz found nearly two-thirds (65%) of executives surveyed say their organization is planning to hire recent graduates with either a bachelor's or master’s degree this year. More than one-third (35%) say they are hiring the same number of new graduates this year than in recent years, and 30% say they plan to hire more.
The interview process was cited as the most critical element in the hiring decision by the vast majority of respondents (71%). Past internship or work experience (21%), reputation of the school (5%) and references (4%), were other cited factors in hiring decisions.
The survey found that, according to respondents, during the interview phase, the most common mistake candidates make is not doing their homework on the position and the company (59%) followed by applying for a position beyond their ability (18%), lack of professionalism (12%), and overemphasizing salary and title (11%).
Executives were also asked how closely related their current job was to their college degree. Almost two-thirds (64%) said very closely related, while 36% said it was not related at all.

Very true. Its a good thing for me, so I cant complain, however its crappy how these older people may be so close to retirement and they get booted because someone younger and willing to make less money takes their job.

Pharmacy
Regardless of the economy, people will still require medical attention and prescriptions, as illustrated by BLS figures, which estimate employment of pharmacists to grow by 22 percent through 2016.
Narinder Duggal, clinical pharmacy specialist, internist and medical director of Liberty Bay Internal Medicine, explains, "Not only will people always need medicine and health care, but there are even more medications today. People need help understanding what medications they take, any possible reactions and interactions with other drugs or supplements."
"One of the biggest benefits of taking a career in pharmacy is the variety of opportunities," says Duggal. "There are many different sub-categories or branches such as retail, clinical or hospital pharmacies. There are government organizations, economic pharmacists, those that work for HMos or healthcare insurance companies like Blue Cross."

I'd be alright either way

Now only if the part time job market was steady enough to support those on the 7yr track.

exactly, companies lay off the people that have been there for 30 years and fill the slot with some recent college kid with no experience, pay him/her peanuts, and wander why standards have fallen.

Peanuts really! Id take peanuts cause right now im only getting paid with the shells. 3 months or so out and I can’t get a job. Anyone need a college grad with a BS in Pharmaceutical Marketing & Management (3.3gpa)
and college grads with no exp and huge student loan are highly motivated people!

Could have fooled me. I have been applying to jobs left and right and I am barely getting any callbacks for interviews. My resume is polished and has been checked by many professionals, and I have good experience relevant to jobs I apply for and still nothing. Apparently being college educated, pursuing graduate degrees, winning a lot of awards at previous jobs, and having good references mean nothing. I am even told that I interview really well by those who have interviewed me.
I am looking for HR specifically. I am almost convinced that I am being discriminated against on the basis that I am a young male looking to get into HR. Every where I have worked and many places I have been to interviews in the past have all females working the HR jobs. ALL FEMALES, not even one male. I am starting to feel like a male nurse at this point. Thats just me, but I can't help but get the feeling that these middle-aged HR ladies would rather hire a female that can BS with instead of a young male they have nothing in common with. But I can't prove anything except the fact of what I have seen.
