NJ Tint Laws & North NJ Tint Shops
this isnt for my camaro (its already tinted all around) but for my girfriends car.. a navy blue 2006 scion tc. shes thinking about tinting her car and i wanted to ask about the NJ tint laws.. can anyone clairfy or give some web links on what the laws actually are? the scion tc is a coupe, so i want to know if its legal to tint the front windows, if it is, is it only up to a certain tint %? will she fail inspection with ANY tint? or just really dark tint? just looking for some clarification..
secondly...looking for good tint shops in north NJ, (specifically bergen or passaic counties) but others up north will do... thinking about getting her car tinted as a present.
thanxx in advance.

yeah you can only tint the rear windows . So judging how it's a Scion tC you can tint the two rear (driver and passenger) windows and the rear window. HOWEVER darkness. . . I used to have 25% on my 94 z28 conv. but the popo made me take it off

Hey Riggs,
I'm in the middle of getting tinted too. I have a thread in the "appearance" section and one in "Central Jersey" asking people about local tint shops. Check them out. A lot of good ones listed.
NJ states you can have any % on the rear windows. That includes driver and passenger rear door windows. The front driver and passenger windows however must remain factory. No tint at all. Although some cars have a very slight tint from the manufacturer. This doesn't stop most people from tinting anyway but you will fail inspection with tint up front. Just do a search for "NJ Tint Laws" on the web and it lists all the same info.

As has already been stated, the two windows directly to the left and right of the driver, as well as the windshield must be left the way they came from the factory, anything further back can go as dark as you want.

except for the windshield strip. i believe it can be any percent including solid but can not exceed the two markings on either side of the windshield. its about 4 inches from the top.

HOW DARK CAN WINDOW TINT BE IN NEW JERSEY?
Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In New Jersey, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.
• Windshield No tint is allowed on the windshield.
• Front Side Windows No tint can be applied legally to this window.
• Back Side Windows Any darkness can be used.
• Rear Window Any darkness can be used.

there is a separate statute governing the strip at the top if that's what's bothering you

the only ways you can have front windows and the windshield tinted is if it came stock like that or you have an eye problem and have a written letter that you keep with you at all times from your eye doctor....
so become good friends with an eye doctor.

im almost 100% sure you are allowed some tint, 4 or 6 inches on the very top of your windshield. i used to get pulled over all the time for my front two windows and always asked officers and thats what they said

I finally got my dd tinted, 5% all around, no windsheild.(anything is illegal in NJ on it)
i just had a local cop staring HARD at me as i passed by, 5 seconds later, i see him flying up behind me as im coming up to a stop sign. i paused a bit so he could figure out what he was doing then i went on my way and he banged a u turn right where he was. haha. i love it.

i may be mistaking, but i do believe that strips are legal to a certain height, the markings on the upper corners of the windshield.

you are mistaken
NJ allows NO tint whatsoever on the windsheild. The factory tint stripe means nothing. trust me. ever sinc emy first car at the age 16 ive been looking at tint laws. I even had the doctors orders trick to get my caddy done.
nj is as follows:
front windsheild: none
front side windows: none
rear side windows: any%
rear back window: any%
and supposedly, if back window is tinted, dual side mirrors are required.
If you tell me that NJ is any different then that, you're just an idiot. if it wasnt 3 am, i'd look up the title 39 statue where it says all this in legal writing.

According to what I have read a note from a doctor isn't enough to get you out of a tint ticket. I would assume that most officers will honor it, but I think you are actually supposed to use the Dr's note to get paperwork from the DMV that shows that you have a need for the tinted windows.
And yes, if the rear window is tinted, you do need to have dual side mirrors.
