Clutch slipping or tire spin?

Well about 3 weeks ago I was on the parkway beating on the car a little bit and when I shifted into 3 I had the clutch hydraulics stick on me and the clutch roasted bad enough that 5 minutes later when I parked the car you could smell clutch very well. Ever since then I've been paranoid thinking the clutch is slipping and every once and a while you do smell clutch after I get on it and then park it. Info on the car: it's a bolt on ls1 putting down 333RWHP and it's going through a stock clutch with about 40K miles on it. Here is a video to show what it sounds like. If you don't want to watch all of it, fast forward to the 1 minute mark because that's when I run through the gears and you can hear it when I shift into 2nd.

Get on the highway going about 50mph or so, put the car in 6th, and floor it. You'll find out REAL fast if it's slipping. It'll start to go in the higher gears first, at least that's what I've noticed.

BTW watched the vid and @ 1minute when you blast 1st to 2nd, it just sounds like some tire spin...?

I've done many of the highway tests and the clutch has passed many 6 to 4 punchs. My thought is that the clutch is only slipping under high RPM shifts when I'm asking the most of it.

Downshifting to 4th will put less strain on your clutch than if you floor it in 6th gear.....

I've put only 7k miles on the car since I bought it, The clutch was replaced at 134K and the car now has 178K. The smell of clutch only pops up when I go and do runs like the one at the 1 minute mark of the video and it's not that strong which makes me think the clutch is only slipping during high rpm shifts and it may be the fault of the clutch hydraulics. It's more than likely just tire spin, but like I said i was paranoid after i know i burnt the clutch pretty good a few weeks ago.

hydraulics sticking is never a good thing. that would cause the clutch to possibly hang up or drag, like not fully disengage. check your clutch fluid, get that slave replaced with a new 01-02 slave and buy a new line that goes from master cylinder to slave cylinder from tickperformance. its alot easier than doing the drill mod and wrapping the line. if youre lucky, itll last u a bit longer lol. and like a few of us were saying, put it in 6th gear around 45-50 and floor it in 6th, see if the rpms jump up in 6th gear. if they dont, youll be alright. if they do, then it will be time for a new clutch. hope this helps!

it's a JVC Av2 i believe. Anyway I hit the track tonight and I have found out that it's the clutch hydraulics because the clutch would not disengage and I ended up grinding gears on 2 out of my 4 runs. I'll be changing the clutch fluid over the weekend and hit Atco on tuesday and see if that helps.

my clutch sorta has the same issue, but not so much slipping, just not engaging all the way or something like that. if im driving "spiritedly" and it usually happens when i shift from 3rd to 4th at around 4-5k. ill hit the clutch to shift and it will like act weird and like snap back, then when i push it again it will stay stuck down half way. i think my slave/master is shot, i looked at the fluid and it looked black pretty much, changed most of it today, gonna bleed it out and try to change it all out

Sounds good. I plan on changing the fluid and bleeding the whole system tomorrow too. Then after that I'm probably gonna change the trans fluid since I'm sure it's got a nice amount of shavings in it from last night at the track.

youre most likely correct. i just saw a thread on LS1tech and was like o cool and x'd out the window.

transamkid and njnetsfan, im sorry to say that bleeding your hydraulic system isnt the cure. it will happen over and over again. replace them whenever you can. if you got the dough, get an adjustable master cylinder and 01-02 slave. and either have the drill mod done or get that line from tickperformance (you might have to buy their master cylinder to make the line work)

I think I'm gonna go with the adjustable master cylinder and 01-02 slave and while I'm at it just throw a ls7 clutch in it too. It's funny how my winter cam fund went towards suspension and now all new clutch hydraulics and a new clutch.

you dont drill mod the slave......you drill mod the hose on the master that connects to the slave. if your buying the tick master, you dont need to do the drill mod because they use a larger line

Why is everyone so hot on the LS7 clutch all of a sudden? The specs don't sound like much for the money. Am I missing something?

Because it's a very cost effective solution that holds a good bit more power than a stock LS1 clutch (LS6 that came in the 01-02 might be a different story).

I plan on letting someone else do the clutch install so they can deal with the bleeding of the clutch hydraulics
