New Z28 has been reconfirmed

http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43600

Quote:
"Inside Line just got confirmation that the supercharged 500-plus horsepower Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 is back in the product plan and is set for production. It had appeared that the extra-high-performance Camaro had fallen victim to the cost-cutter's knife.

According to Ed Welburn, GM's Vice President for global design, the on-again, off-again Z/28 is back in the plan. The modified body is done, according to Welburn. There is still calibration work to be done on the powertrain, though. We're still looking at about a year's wait before the Z/28 would appear.

The basic engine is a 6.2-liter supercharged V8, which sees duty in the Cadillac CTS-V. In that application, the engine makes 556-horsepower and is available with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. There's no reason to assume that the Z/28 wouldn't be offered with both transmissions and only a fool would turn down the power much. The vehicle will come with a specific body kit with a slightly raised hood to accommodate the top-mounted intercooler/supercharger unit and a tall rear spoiler. Specific wheel design and suspension tune will surely be part of the package. Wider rear rubber might prove necessary, too, we'd think. (Obviously, this isn't a Camaro Z/28 in the photo, so you use your imagination and mentally add a hood scoop.)

Alongside this news, we hear that GM is considering doing a higher-performance version of the V6 Camaro, in hopes of piquing the interest of less traditional Camaro enthusiasts. -- Dan Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit"
I always assumed that it was coming back on the table soon enough, just didn't think it would be announced this soon.

Time to go GT500 hunting

Hell, a mildly modded SS could go GT500 hunting. The Z28 comparison won't even be fair.

Sounds like the Z28 will be priced under the Corvette (duh) but won't be available until late 2011.

They'll have to re-certified everything with the new engine in it.

Big Al was in Aruba.
I leave for Aruba, and now GM wants to put a split window on the C7 Corvette, and made a 4300lbs Camaro Z28.

Ponder this boys and girls...there is a very good chance that the upcoming CTS-V coupe (there is a V-wagon approved too) will weigh LESS then the Camaro "Z28".
CTS-V sedan comes in at 4200lbs give or take.
Camaro SS is a shade under 3900lbs.

So instead of making a Camaro Z06, they are making a Camaro GT500. Great.

There are no plans on making the Corvette a hybrid. It would be easy, and at this point there will probably be some sort of mild hybrid system planned for ever car from here till the end of the combustion engine.
Porshce and Ferrari are both are developing performance hybrid systems for thier cars.
The next S class is rumored to be a full hybrid only.
BMW is using the GM-Developed Two-Mode system to boost performance and MPG from its new Twin Turbo V8 engine that is already in production for the X6, the 750i, and 550i GT. This is the same V8TT that will replace the big V10 in the M5. Possible that a two-mode hyrbid system could boost the output of the upcoming M5 from the 530 rumored power to near 600 when needed.

For GM's sake, for the sake of trying to return to the image of a company of innovation, a hybrid performance Corvette would be revolutionary.

Yea, I'm guessing base MSRP will be $49,995

And yes Al, I agree with you. Sounds like the Z28 will be a heavy pig compared to it's v6 and SS brothers. Would be nice to see a lightweight 450-475 hp Z28, but we both knew it wasn't likely.

How would the Z28 weigh 400 lbs more than the SS? That doesn't really make sense unless you put sand bags in the trunk.

Same deal with the Mustang GT and GT500. There is a 300-400lb difference in the two.

Correct, the GT500 is 4k, up from under 3600 lbs.
Its not like the GT500 gets an IRS system either...suspension is the same, at least in design.
Ive heard anywhere from 4100lbs to 4300lbs.

well theres the supercharger, and possibly, hopefully beefyer drivetrain, and some stiffening of the chassis should be nearing 400 lbs, plus a bunch of little things like ground effects, a million z28 badges, and wider rear tires/wheels

Heh, won't happen. They have a lot of faith in this IRS. I haven't actually been searching, but I haven't seen much if any complaining about trouble launching the car.
