Body control module question

Does the body control module have to be coded at the dealer when installed, or are they a plug and play module?

I know on newer BMW's taking out a module right after the car is shut off can cause it to fail, anyone know of that for the BCM

I have an intermittent module that cuts off my windows and headunit. I have tested everything and everything is perfect excpet for that, if i tap on it it goes out, sometimes stays out. When i tap on it again comes on. Sometimes a tap will knock it out for a sec then come right back on. Pull on the wires and shake it that way nothing happens. Only from tapping on it, so i am thinking that between the loudmouths, sub and bumpy roads it is enough to vibrate it enough to cut in and out.

Not really sure of what numerical values i would get out if i tried testing it
