greatest quote today at work from a smart customer.
we have a policy at work, no electrical items can be returned. A guy bought a battery for a Daewoo, thats the first mistake. They wanted to return a battery cause they found out the engine was blown. His girl came in to return it, and I denied the return. She goes storming out of the store, and 15 seconds later her boy comes in. Mr genious argues with me that a Battery is not an electrical item, that starters, and modules are, batteries just send the electricity to them :rofl; we argued for 7 minutes about it. I said to him, when you put batteries in a flashlight, what do you do that for. He says, for electricty, I said BINGO!!
The guy continued to argue that it's not an electricity. Finally I had to raise my tone and tell him he's beat, it's not our fault he misdiagnosed a car with a blown motor. He got all pissed, tells me he's got three kids, I told him that's not my fault nor problem
Then customer begins saying I didnt have to be a Kawk sucka ( you north jersians and your accents make me lulz) and finally leaves.

actually i wouldnt call it an electrical item either, in a parts store-sense...electrical items usually are things like sensors...if someone bought a battery cable from you and tried to return it would you deny it?

good point, i do agree. i also find it silly you couldn't load test the battery, see its still like new, and simply give him store credit or something.

i would have just returned it, not like you are going to see the effects of the returned battery that would probably be bought in a few weeks. When i was at advanced we had the same policy but it was my discretion or whoever was returning the item, if it was in good enough condition it would be placed back on the shelf and if it wasnt usually we took it back charged them 15% restocking and sent it back anyway

I'm with these fools.
Probably not the best business strategy, but if there's no harm done, I'd have taken it back and given him a refund, or at least store credit. Idk.

IMO:
You never know how something that "looks new" was actually used. Electrical parts can hide being broken pretty well- like gauges, sensors, etc.
I would have turned him away as well.

yeah with most things. but a battery? i mean check the voltage, charge it if its low, and load test it. charge him 15% restocking for the little bit of work and/or store credit.

Yes, under our Company, not store policy, we cannot return anything that involves electricity, plug wires, battery cables, sensors, alts/starters, even AC/Heater control panels and blower motor resistors and fuses, etc. When I lifted the box, dust and scrapes from the terminals were seen. It was installed, and was not his problem, but it's not my fault it was misdiagnosed. once you walk out that door with it, don't come back with it because you made the assumption that that's what your problem is.
As I said to one customer after he argued about an electrical return, I asked what he did for a living. He said he was a plumber, I said so if you install a whole bunch of pipes and that doesn't fix the problem, do you take the pipes back and give them their money. He said yea, and I said that's B.S. , you know the answer, and thats the same answer I'm giving you, it didn't fix the problem, but hey you now have a new part that cancels that assumption.

Bingo WBT, there was a problem going around with people going to junkyards buying $5 batteries thee, cleaning them up and trying to return them. We had to enforce a no return without receipt deal. also if an alternator was installed, and the car had an external regulator which went bad and it burned out the alternator and returned it, the next person that gets it is not goign to be happy. We don't have a alt/starter tester here like Advance, the company makes us pay for one of those, which only costs $5,000!!!!
Like I said, you made the diagnosis, the assumption it went bad, thats not our fault if it was incorrect, now there may be an internal problem that can't be deteted. It says right on our receipt no electrical/tool returns, you got 10 days to return it, and anything special ordered, you own it no exceptions. If you don't like it, go to conways right down the road.
We may have lost a customer, but he's not even from here, he's from somewhere far off, so i wouldn't expect to see him anytime soon even if I did the return.

Surprised he didn't just borrow a battery from another car to test if that's what was the problem. I mean that's what I would do before dropping money like that.

yup, just like the electrical, people may have used them, got done what they needed it for, and return it. especially when its tool is 100+ dollars, and we never stock it, and they want to return it. I warn people everytime when they get a tool it cannot be return, adn sometimes they just put it back and say forget it. some say ok, and come back to return it. I tell them what did I say and what do my signs say around my register, end of discussion. I don't mean to be a prick, but we have half a dozen signs in my store stating what we can and cannot do from HQ, I have 3 alone at my register. People tend to be selective when they read, and when they get a receipt, it is written again on there incase they didn't read in my store. As my one sign says, Read your receipt, I don't need to tell you the return policy it's already on there.
Would you guys buy underwear knowing it was previously worn by someone who needed to wear it until their laundry got done, and just returned them? lol

Yeah, I do that myself. Screw paying out the ass for a tool I'm only gonna end up using once, what sense does that make?
