HELP! Dip stick snapped

The end of my dipstick somehow snapped off the rest of it and is now in my oil pan, I just noticed this god knows how long its been like that. I know im gonna have to drain the oil, and more than likely drop my pan. I can drop the pan without touching the trans right? I cant remember if I have to or not.

Snapped off flush with the block? Or the stick itself?

the stick itself, i dont need to remove the pan fully, just enough to stick my small little hand in there...im hoping it floats to the drain hole so i can just hook it and yank it out

Maybe you can draw it out with a strong magnet...

Would a vacuum hose slid down the tube work? Only thing that I can think of without opening the pan.

Did this on my 72. Gotta drop the pan. Its heavy and will slowly start to sink to the sump. You could possibly get it through the train. The magnet might work if the pan is aluminum. If not...you better have a strong magnet.

oook so I pulled the oil pan down as far as I can, and put a magnet back in the pan and pulled out 3 pieces of my dipstick. The 3 peices equal out to the twisted end, 4 holes, and the wording operating level. From looking at a picture on a GM site it appears that the dipstick only has 4 holes, so I believe those are all the pieces since they match up. Does anyone know by a definate how many holes are on the dipstick?
