MUSTANG for 2013 has the MOST Powerful V/8 in the WORLD!
Ford has just announced that the G.T.500 (with the Supercharger) gets an extra 100 ponies, now up to 650 hp, which is the most powerful production V/8 in the world.
This is really getting sick. At what point is it safe to give anybody a car with a top speed of 200 mph and expect them to be ABLE to know how to handle it. I love power myself, but put me behind the wheel of a MB SLS with a 670 hp hand built V/12 with dual Turbos and punch it down, you don't know just how fast this beast accelerates. It makes EVERYTHING else on the road seem to stand still, not to mention waiting for every State Trooper on the road looking at you. Just my

History repeats itself: it will be like the 70s soon. No one will be able to get insurance for these monsters, and the new govt standards are going to force changes.

It think the biggest thing your all forgetting about is the price. You won't be seeing three of these on your way to the store. Also, where are you able to go to perform said 200mph? You'll get a couple idiots behind the wheel and wrap them around a tree, but other then that, the majority of these will be garage queens, since car collecting is a bigger deal then in the 60's and 70's.

they have to keep it in some what of a relative price range. theres a decent amount of GT500s by me. i say i see 10+ a week easy. there a popular car. i dont think they'd jump tag on them that much

When you buy a car like this, it's at the owners discretion wheither to educate themselves by taking a performance driving school ( The right way), or to be cheap, and feel they know what their doing, after stepping up from a toyota Camry to a 650hp car. ( The wrong way)
I believe years ago, when you purchased a Dodge Viper, you were given lessons at a performance track, which was smart since Vipers (a.k.a widow makers) arent the most stable when you get loosesy goosey in it. I can only hope that one day all manufacturers do this for cars with 500+hp, and even that's a little too much for the average joe.

I don't think you got lessons but the Viper had the highest percentage of cars not making it home from the dealership.
Regarding the new GT500, that's awesome and all, but it is Ford.
That means there will be some massive achilles heel or problem.

On a side note.....the 1996-2002 Dodge Viper GTS is still one of the sexiest cars of all time, and certainly the sexiest of all the Vipers.

I like what they are doing with the Factory cars. Nice to see muscle coming back. No matter what you are going to have people that cant handle the horsepower, whether it came that way or someone builds it. At least this way the car is built to handle the power it is putting down, both accelerating and stopping. How many cars are out on the road that have twice as much power as they came with and dont have the mods to support it. Of course with the wrong driver, any car is an accident waiting to happen. This is also a way for these companies to be able to upgrade their race programs. They have been doing this since way back in the day, that is why GM vehicles were offered with powerglides! It wasn't a great cruiser but it worked great in a race car!

Pretty good kick in the nuts to the ZL1. I will await the track testing and such to see which one actually performs better. Unfortunately, I have the feeling most people will just see the HP number and get small man syndrome.
Adding HP to the ZL1 is easy in the aftermarket but GM would need to get some additional paperwork done and likely recertify the emissions cert. Only issue you run into is that they likely won't push power beyond the ZR1.
Fun stuff either way.

I'm still waiting to see the price point. It certainly won't be 6 figures, but there is a lot of neat new features in this car and I would be shocked if the price doesn't see a relatively significant increase from the 2012 GT500.

As long as they keep the 10 airbags and all the safty equipment in it then I really see no reason why it will stop. They get 24 mpg and make 600 hp and have a 5 star crash rating!!

I'm going to say the people that can afford cars like this and can also at the same time throw down for the upkeep, maintenance, gas, and insurance are people who are mature enough to not do 200 down the gsp.
by the way you drove an sls?

Highly false. But can't wait til they do it. I said a while back that I don't think we'll see manufacturers putting 700+ hp cars out on the roads (sans the ZR1 and supercars of the like), but hey, I've been wrong before, so who knows.
I love pushing the envelope.

Let's see how well those ponies are planted, keep at it Ford! Personally I hate 5th gen Camaros so this makes a sweet alternative to the ZL1.
And who cares if people can't drive these..It's a product, buyer beware it will kick you in the nuts if you disrespect it. You can't expect a consumer to do anything but hopefully purchase your product, all other factors are irrelevant and not the manufacturers problem if little Johnny down the street is being picked up by a vacuum after going into a wall doing a buck 70.
I love living in America

There was an article in USA Today about this (I'm traveling I get it under my door every morning). It also posed the question of is this too much power for the average person.
